Write it for me

Standing up to talk about your father in front of everyone who loved him is one of the hardest things you'll do. Here's a way through it.

Find the stories

Write down every memory that comes, without judging. Then circle the two or three that made you smile or that everyone in the family tells. Those are your eulogy.

Say what he gave you

A work ethic, a sense of humor, a way of treating people. Naming it — and giving one example of it — is often the most moving part.

Example opening

If you knew my dad, you know he believed every problem could be solved with duct tape, patience, or a cup of Cuban coffee — usually all three. My name is Daniel, and I was lucky enough to be his son for forty-two years…

Fictional example.
