Write it for meFor many veterans, their service was one of the defining parts of their life. A good veteran's obituary names that service clearly and with respect.
Service details to gather
- Branch of service
- Years served and any conflicts or eras (for example, Vietnam era)
- Rank at discharge, if known
- Unit, ship, or base, if meaningful to them
- Medals or honors — check the discharge papers (DD-214) for accuracy
Where to place it
Service usually goes right after early life and before career, in chronological order. If service was the center of their identity, you can mention it in the first sentence.
Funeral honors
If military honors will be rendered at the service, note it with the service details so attendees know what to expect.
Example
Sergeant First Class (Ret.) Luis Ortega, 76, a 22-year Army veteran who served two tours in Vietnam, passed away on October 4, 2026. After retiring from the Army, Luis spent another two decades coaching Little League, where he was known for teaching discipline with a smile…
Fictional example.
