An obituary for your wife is a public goodbye to the person who knew you best. Start with the facts, then add the details that made her who she was — the ones friends will recognize right away.

Names

Include her maiden name. Common styles are "Maria Lopez Hernandez" or "Maria (Lopez) Hernandez." It helps old friends and relatives who knew her before marriage recognize her.

Her work — all of it

Name her career if she had one, and also the work that never had a title: raising children, caring for parents, running the church festival, keeping everyone connected. Both belong in the obituary.

Survivors

"She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Daniel," followed by children, grandchildren, her parents if living, and her siblings.

Example

Linda Marie (Sullivan) Pratt, 67, a kindergarten teacher for 31 years who could calm a room of five-year-olds with a single raised eyebrow, passed away peacefully at home on September 27, 2026, with her husband Daniel holding her hand…

Fictional example.
